Senior Dogs make Great Companions!

If you’re looking for a pet who’s already housetrained, quiet, docile, and able to be alone while you or your family is out of the house at work or school, please consider one of our older pets.

These mostly aged 6-9 year old pets make excellent companions, yet they are often overlooked by folks who are considering adopting. They ask so very little of their person, but give so very much of themselves when they realize they’ve got a great thing going (after a sometimes not so very good life).

Here are some of our more senior dogs. Check out their biographies and more pics for each of them by clicking on the links below.

A Fabulous Day at Hollywood Feed on Union Avenue

Real Good Dog Rescue volunteers were out in full force today for our regular 1st Saturday adoption event at Hollywood Feed on Union Avenue in Memphis. Dogs and puppies have a way of showing up when our volunteers are out and about and today was no exception. We met 3 new dogs: Evelyn, a Shih Tzu, Rocky Pinhead, a purebred minpin, and Mar-Bell, a Chihuahua. We quickly said goodbye to Evelyn, as she was adopted before the end of our event! Others who were adopted included Spankie, an Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler mix; Kramer, a Brussels Griffon, Terrier mix; and Wesley, a young poodle. Our dogs, puppies, and volunteers had a great time today. The pictures below tell the story! We don’t have any events scheduled for Easter weekend. But if you’re interested in adopting one of our dogs or puppies just follow the instructions on their bios to let us know of your interest. Our upcoming events include:

  • Saturday, April 18, our usual 3rd Saturday event right back here at Hollywood Feed, 2013 Union Avenue, from 11am-3pm
  • Saturday, April 18, an adoption event at Magnolia Kennels – check our website for details as we get those

Hope to see you at a future adoption event!

Blue needs a new home – can you help?

Kathryn Cooley is trying to find a home for a great dog. Here’s Blue’s story:

My prior roommate left her dog at our house when moving out and I would like to find a good home for him.  He is a 1 year old Huskie mix with white fur, 1 blue and 1 green eye, medium build, and great personality.  I am willing to help out however I can to find him a home, as I am not able to have a dog long term.  He is neutered and has all of his shots up to date. Please let me know if you would be able to help or know of any services that will.  I know once people meet him they will want to adopt him!

Blue sounds like a great guy and his pics show him to be adorable!

If you can help Kathryn find Blue his forever home, please contact her at 317-408-1984 or kathryn.cooley@gmail.com.

Memphis’s best kept secret

Trebek was on short time at Memphis Animal Services when he caught the eye of foster mom, Julie.  To say that Julie is fond of terrier types is an understatement and she quickly obtaind permission from Good Dog Director, Lisa to adopt the handsome, friendly Jack Russell.  trebek-23

As you can tell, Julie is a Jeopardy fan and this handsome boy got a famous name.  Trebek is amazing.  He came into his foster home perfectly housetrained and has not had the first accident.  He is very playful – with others or self-entertains (and entertains foster mom, Julie) by clowning around with his toys, tossing them high in the air and catching them again.  He’s quite the talented fella.  Trebek loves kids, other dogs and all people who come his way.  He is not a good candidate for a home with cats.

Lovely and loving Lindsey is looking for her FURever home

Lindsey is a lovely black and white Border Collie mix who has waited a VERY long time to find her forever home. She has lived in a shelter’s outdoor kennel for close to a year. The shelter kept saying she was adopted, when she was merely lost in the shuffle of numerous outside dogs.

This approximately 3 year old young girl appears to have taken it all in stride. She is sweet natured and quiet, weighing 44 lbs. She is spayed, heartworm negative, and appears perfectly housetrained.

Lindsey is in a foster home with 5 other dogs and she fit in fine from the start. Attentive to her person, she is definitely NOT an alpha dog and gets along with young, old, alpha, and odd dogs and puppies in her foster home.

Tentative for her first couple of days, Lindsey is now enjoying running and playing with her foster siblings. She is great at mealtimes. She rarely barks. She is pretty much the perfect dog!

Check out Lindsey’s Glog here.

If you would like to adopt Lindsey, please contact Lisa at ltrenthem@gmail.com or 901-276-7751.

Holiday adoption at Poplar Plaza Petco

We’re here at Poplar Plaza Petco with lots of great dogs till 4pm today (Sunday 12/21/08). Come visit with the dogs and our volunteers!

Bernie is looking for love … and a home

Bernie is a fabulous Collie mix who ended up as a stray at the Memphis Animal Shelter, one of our area’s high kill shelters. The photographer told us that Bernie pressed himself up against the front of the cage as far and hard as he could, so that you couldn’t possibly miss him. We rescued him from the shelter, so he’s safe from being euthanized.

But now Bernie is looking for his forever home. He’d be content with a great foster home that could give him the attention he is so deserving of. He is a medium-sized Collie mix who is energetic, inquisitive, and attentive. He seems to very much want to please any human that comes close. Such a loving young dog.

Have a look at Bernie’s Glog – he’s hoping to find a home soon, as it’s getting colder, the nights are getting longer, and he’s got a lot of loving warmth to share! Contact Lisa at ltrenthem@gmail.com if you have questions about adopting or fostering Bernie!

Collin the Brittany Spaniel wants his new home

collin1Collin is a lovely Brittany Spaniel who is full of energy and love – and looking for his forever home.

He’d make a GREAT running or walking partner. If you’ve got another high energy dog or puppy, he’d be great in helping tire that one out!

Check out Collin’s Glog!

Contact Lisa Trenthem @ ltrenthem@gmail.com if you could adopt (or even provide a foster home) to this great guy.

Saturday at Hollywood Feed is always fun

On the 13th we were at the Cordova Hollywood Feed Store. The employees there are great. Always looking out for people who might be interested in adopting. Ever helpful as we set up and tear down. Great in working with adopters as they get just the right bling for their new little ones!

We had two adoptions and several other people looking who were very interested. Our adoptees were Rico and Blitzen. We had some of our usual contingent of volunteers, along with some new volunteers who are fostering Jax and Bernie.

We are always excited to see new volunteers helping! If you’d like something to do during one of our adoption events, come on out and visit with us. We’ll put you to work showing off one of our great dogs or puppies!

Poplar Plaza Petco extends a warm welcome to great dogs

This past Saturday we were again at Poplar Plaza Petco, at Poplar & Highland, for our regular adoption event. Even though it was the Saturday after Thanksgiving … and the 2nd day of the massive shopping after Thanksgiving … we had a lot of visitors stopping by to pet our dogs and pups and, in a couple of instances, to adopt!

Adopted were Roscoe, our young male Chihuahua, and Little Boss, our recently acquired Shih Tzu. We are hoping that Lambchop, a much too cute Corgi mix, was adopted. Her potential adoptive mom needed to introduce her to the rest of the family, namely the potential adoptive dad!

Lots of other cute pics from the day. Looking below you’ll see Roscoe being chased by Buzzy and Fuzzy, the terrible twosome who are, as Lambchop, F A R too cute! They are a dynamic duo. Make sure and look at their video debut in the VodPod at the left (Buzzy and Fuzzy and a Toy) or check it out on YouTube.

Chloe is in a couple of photos – the little rats caught her attention at one point and you could tell she’d like to get one! Stretch is also pictured, getting some well-deserved one-on-one attention. Jack dances on his hind legs for a young girl.

We have a new addition to our great dogs – Portia, the schipperke. Check out her video in the VodPod at the left, as well as her YouTube debut. She’s a fabulous dancer!

We hope to see you at one of our upcoming adoption events! Check out our website for dates listed.
