We’ve got a lot of senior dogs who are looking for their forever homes. These dogs are typically the lowest maintenance (that puppy energy and puppy “challenges” are long gone).

If you’re looking for a pet who’s already housetrained, quiet, docile, and able to be alone while you or your family is out of the house at work or school, please consider one of our older pets. These mostly aged 6-9 year old pets make excellent companions, yet they are often overlooked by folks who are considering adopting. They ask so very little of their person, but give so very much of themselves when they realize they’ve got a great thing going (after a sometimes not so very good life).

Saturday at the Hollywood Feed on Union, Good Dog Rescue had several adoptions …Ridgely, JoJo, Liddy, and Bijou! Today we had adoptions at Hollywood Feed Store in Cordova and here are a few pictures of the people and dogs adopted and present. Gretchen, Meg and Roland were adopted today.

We even had a visit from a former adoption….two weeks ago a great family adopted Bixby now Sammie…in just two weeks he has grown so much taller and still remembered her foster mom.  Here is a before and current picture.  Thanks for coming and taking good care of our Good Dog!

Tucker is a great dog who doesn’t seem to make the best impression with strangers if he is insecure in his environment, like at adoption events!

He is fostered in a home with several other dogs. He tends to find a spot where he doesn’t get right in the middle of any chaos, unless Marley the chihuahua happens to be around.

Tucker loves Marley and they have a blast playing together. In fact, the smaller dogs seem to like Tucker, I think he feels that he is their size. He has been cat tested and failed however. Tucker seems uncomfortable with larger dogs; since he was rescued from the streets this is not so hard to understand.

He really is a sweetheart who is housetrained and does not chew up anything in the house. He is also pretty quiet. Tucker is fostered with Lisa.

What a beautiful day for the dogs of Good Dog Rescue…yes, I would say we had such a great day for adoptions. Set up out side to enjoy the day and many came to see our dogs. We had 4 adoptions and several additional applications.

Whitley is a Poodle, Terrier mix who came to Real Good Dog Rescue along with her buddy, Emeril. She was a real sweetheart in her time with us, even though she tested positive for heartworms and had to undergo that treatment.

Jan and Dave Stevens adopted our Whitley. They renamed her Daisy. And they sent us this update:

I’m pleased to report that Daisy has achieved two milestones:  She is heartworm negative on her follow-up test and she has logged her first hundred miles in power walking. Thought that you would like to hear the good news on both accounts.  The good life continues for all of us.

We are so pleased to hear of Daisy reaching these milestones. This is wonderful news! Thanks for taking the time to let us know!

Despite her adorable good looks and sweet, outgoing personality, Delilah the shih tzu had some odds stacked against her when she came into rescue from a regional Animal Control facility.  The AC had picked her up injured with a pelvis broken in three places.  Her left leg was totally dangling (blown ACL or nerve damage, we weren’t sure) and she had ‘young dog’ bilateral hip displaysia (her femur heads look like cauliflower).

But Delilah was not one to let this keep a GOOD DOG down.  Crate rest, good medicine and time worked their magic.

Phillip and Beth Woods in Little Rock were surfing the net when sweet Delilah caught Phillip’s attention.

He confessed she had him at WOOF today when he came to claim her.  This picture tells it all.

Welcome, Wood’s family into the extended GOOD DOG family…keep those pictures and updates coming!

It was a small band of dedicated volunteers, with a small number of adoptable dogs and puppies, who attended Good Dog Rescue’s 2nd adoption event of the weekend. Several potential adopters stopped by to visit with us and the dogs. The dogs did their best to show themselves off! Here are some pics from yesterday. Video coming soon!

Chris Peck wrote an important editorial in The Commercial Appeal today. He describes the need for responsible pet owners – people who don’t merely view animals as objects to be bought and discarded at will. He points to the responsibility of the public for the more than 13,000 annual euthanasia’s at the shelter. He reminds us of the poor city management that couldn’t properly run the Memphis Sexual Assault Resource Center … and how that same management was responsible for the animal shelter.

Peck reminds us of these important points:

Feed your dog. Care for your dog. Spay or neuter your dog because we don’t need more puppies.
And cheer on the new mayor as he takes on Job 1 in City Hall — cleaning up the mess.

Take time to have a look at the letters to the editor about the animal shelter situation. Today’s Hot Button reader responses were interesting.

What a great day for adoptions…we had 5 great families adopt from Good Dog Rescue today. Seemed like we were busy all day. Many came in to visit and obtain information or adopt. We still have lots of good dogs available to adopt.

We have many other dogs that were at the event and still need to be given a great ‘fur’ever home.

Darrell Eldridge will be a temporary facilities manager.

Lucy Shaw, prior CEO at The Regional Medical Center at Memphis, is a consultant.

Mayor Wharton says that the level of care at the shelter will be comparable to the care given at hospitals.

High level of care AND high level of oversight is promised. The Mayor has communicated with members of the city council, especially around a need to reinstitute funding for an operations manager that had been cut from the budget.

The Mayor says he is very hands on, he loves pets, and he loves details. He says this is the difference in why things will improve with his administration versus in the efforts of other administrations.

The Mayor describes how he had never received a threatening telephone call during any of his court cases – until he defended a person charged with animal abuse (he never had phone calls when defending murderers, assault cases, etc.).
