Mitzi is ‘Bama bound!

When Birmingham, AL residents  Mary Jane and Terry Marcus applied for Mitzi, Foster Mom, Julie, urged them to adopt local.  Mary Jane’s impassioned plea to Julie won her over, along with her excellent vet reference, and Yorkie experience (16 years).  Mary Jane made the drive to Memphis today, Sunday, to meet Mitzi, Sprinkles, Vader and Tina Turner, but it was Mitzi who won Mary Jane’s heart with her lovely blonde hair and bouncy spirit.      adopted-1bama-bound

Memphis’s best kept secret is OUT!

You’ll recall a blog a few days ago  featuring Trebek as Memphis’s best kept secret.  Well, the Sauer family–Ari, Hanielle and their precious twin girls–met Trebek at Petco and fell in love.  home-at-last1 There was one condition–Trebek had to get along with Belle, their chow/lab mix and Sparkle, the cherished family cat.  Trebek passed with flying colors….respecting the ‘leave it’ command when he got too friendly with Sparkle–who turned,  hissed and scared him….then enticing Belle to play a great game of tag in the sunny back yard.    All Ari could say was ‘man, can he run fast!’  Pictures are worth a 1000 words.  Look at these joyful faces!

From the Bootheel to the High Life

inez-shorty Shorty went to his first ever adoption event on Saturday at Wags and Whiskers in east Memphis.  Inez and Paul Thomas strolled in and fell in love.  They came to the Petco event the next day and opted to take Shorty home for a little trial visit.  Still, Inez wanted to make sure she was making the best decision for Shorty.  Well, come Monday, she called Julie bright and early to say…WE WANT HIM….and so, look what greeted Short–now renamed ROSCOE LEE…when he arrived HOME for good .  no-sharing-necessary-in-the-new-homeahthat-is-the-spot

Home at last for Denver Nugget

Denver Nugget’s very first adoption event was also his last

The Lynches LOVE Denver Nugget

The Lynches LOVE Denver Nugget

….his adoptive family, Mary Ann and Tim Lynch, came to meet Jacques, but could not resist the golden goodness they found in Denver.   Their former dog was lost to cardiac disease at a ripe old age and they were looking for a smaller dog who loves to ride in cars, loves to play and go on walks and loves just to hang out with his people.   Upon exiting the crate to meet the Lynches, Denver promptly rolled over to demand some belly rubs and then proceed to charm the Lynches right into signing the dotted line of the adoption agreement.  He took them shopping for a new leash, harness, collar, bed and crate….before jumping into the pretty red SUV and heading home.   Mary Ann called Denver’s foster mom today to report that they had spent Sunday afternoon at Shelby farms, where Denver continued to wow his new mom and dad with his good manners and abilities to keep up with them off lead as well as on lead.  Congratulations, Mary Ann and Tim….you’re little bit of gold is a treasure indeed.

Help us help them…

Tyler is heartworm positive

Tyler is heartworm positive

At least six of our GOOD DOGS need YOUR to help for their heartworm treatments.  Heartworm is a parasite that attacks the cardiac muscle, causing blockages, symptoms such as lethargy, coughing and ultimately death of the afflicted dog.

Pretty Boy, Tyler (see photo right), Coco Chanel, Bree, Farley, and Speaker all must be treated for heartworms.  This treatment ranges in cost from $100 to $200 per animal, dependent on the size of the animal and the severity of the parasitic infestation.

Additionally, heartworm positive dogs spend up to 90 additional days in foster care recuperating from the infestation, before they can be adopted into loving homes.  This extended stay means GOOD DOG RESCUE cannot take in other dogs until foster space opens up.

Adoption fees for GOOD DOGS range from $125 to $150, which includes their spay/neuter, their vaccinations, and their rabies shots.  So, when we have a dog that must also receive treatment for heartworms, instantly, the dog’s adoption fee covers less than half of the medical bills for the animal.  Please note, EVERY heartworm positive dog taken into GOOD DOG RESCUE receives treatment.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?  Excellent question!

First, you can help by donating funds to cover all or a portion of a heartworm treatment for one of these very deserving GOOD DOGS.

Secondly, you can foster a dog during its treatment.  There is NO EASIER foster than a dog recuperating from heartworms.  They must be confined to crate rest and can only be let out to go potty ON LEAD.  Since they feel kind of lousy, they’re generally quiet and sleep a lot…IN THEIR CRATE, so they are NO TROUBLE at all to foster.

Please help a GOOD DOG recover from heartworms by sponsoring his/her medical treatment and/or fostering during recuperation.
